About the online Python compiler
This page is a Python editor and runner in one. Type or paste a script, press Run, and the output appears in the console next to your code. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
It is built for short programs: trying out a snippet from a tutorial, checking how a built-in behaves, or working through a practice problem before you set up Python on your own machine.
How to use it
- Write your code in the editor, or replace the starter program with your own.
- Press Run to execute the script.
- Read the result in the output console. Errors show the Python traceback, including the line number.
- Edit and run again as many times as you like.
Example: count word frequencies
Paste this into the editor and press Run. It uses a dictionary to count how often each word appears.
text = "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog the end"
counts = {}
for word in text.split():
counts[word] = counts.get(word, 0) + 1
# Print the words from most to least frequent
for word, n in sorted(counts.items(), key=lambda item: -item[1]):
print(word, n)What it is good for
- Testing a snippet without creating a file or a virtual environment
- Following along with a Python lesson on a phone, tablet, or locked-down school computer
- Checking the output of a loop, a list comprehension, or a string method
- Sharing a quick example during a study session or interview practice
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install Python to use this compiler?
No. You only need a web browser. Write your code in the editor and press Run.
Is the online Python compiler free?
Yes. The compiler is free to use and does not require an account.
Is Python compiled or interpreted?
Python is usually described as interpreted: your source is translated to bytecode and executed by the Python interpreter line by line, so there is no separate build step. Tools like this one are still commonly called "online compilers".
Why does my program show an IndentationError?
Python uses indentation to mark blocks of code. Every line inside a function, loop, or if statement must be indented by the same amount, and tabs must not be mixed with spaces.
